Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia History
The name Bondi Beach comes from the Aboriginal word boondi, which means something similar to “surf“. Its development as a commercial beach started in 1851 when banker and politician Edward Smith Hall purchased 200 acres of the area. He and his son-in-law Francis O’Brien developed it into an estate called The Bondi Estate.
Francis O’Brien bought part of the estate between 1855 and 1877, opened the area for a public resort, and developed picnic spots and amusement resorts. However, he threatened to close public access because the space became too crowded. The local government intervened and turned the area into a public beach in 1882, renaming it Bondi Beach.
