Shopping for groceries is necessary for living everywhere including living in Sydney. With the large metropolitan area, Sydney has an uncountable amount of supermarkets, making you confused about where to do your shopping. Therefore, here are the best supermarkets in Sydney to be considered.
Woolworths
Compared to any other supermarket chain in Australia, Woolworths is the biggest one. Many of the supermarkets are spread across Sydney, two of them are located near Alexandria Park and close to Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport. Most Woolworths Supermarkets in the city are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Woolies, as it is commonly called in Australia, provides everything for your needs. In addition to the complete groceries, there are also DVDs, stationery, household products, pet supplies, and others available. If you have no mood to go out, you can use its delivery service as well.
Coles
Just like Woolworths, Coles has a lot of supermarkets in Sydney. There is one in Sydney’s CBD, and the two closest branches are at World Square and in Pyrmont, close to the Australian National Maritime Museum. The supermarkets in the city have different opening hours, but most of them are open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Independent Grocers of Australia
IGA or Independent Grocers of Australia is Australia’s large supermarket chain with at least three types of stores namely Supermarket, Xpress, and Local Grocer in Sydney. There is one IGA Supermarket and one IGA Xpress close to Anzac Memorial, and there is one IGA Local Grocer at UNSW.
Those three examples are just some of the many IGA branches spread across Sydney. All of them sell various categories of goods including frozen food, household cleaning, health and wellbeing, and many others. However, they are open and close at different times, with the earliest opening at 6 a.m. and the latest closing at midnight.
ALDI
In Sydney and the entire Australia, ALDI is a tough competition for the three of the best supermarkets in Sydney above in terms of supermarket chains. FoodWorks
As you have probably guessed by the name FoodWorks mainly provides food at its stores. Indeed, FoodWorks is Australia’s local and humble supermarket brand that focuses on selling food products, but you can also find other things like cleaning products, pet needs, and merchandise.
FoodWorks Supermarkets are located in several places across Sydney. An example is the one close to Redfern Train Station, which is open from 6.30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Another example is in Glebe, opening between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m.
Maruyu
This supermarket is one of a kind in Sydney because Maruyu is a Japanese supermarket. It sells similar products to other supermarkets like pantries, snacks, and health and beauty products. However, most of those products, or perhaps all of them, are from Japan.
It is recommended for Japanese enthusiasts in Sydney to shop at Maruyu. Find one on Kent Street, near Tumbalong Park, it is open from 11 a.m. to 7.30 p.m.
Metro
Not to be confused with the public transportation system in Sydney, Metro is a part of Woolworths. However, it is not exactly the same as its parent since it focuses on providing fresh and easy food for people.
You can find a bunch of Woolworths Metro in Sydney with the CBD alone having 10 of the supermarkets. Be aware that they have different opening hours. Some are open from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m., but some others are not open at all on weekends.If your place is near one of those best supermarkets in Sydney, you are in luck as you do not need to go far for grocery shopping. Still, there is nothing wrong with trying other supermarkets in other areas to get new shopping experiences.
