As a mixed-use development project, Elizabeth Quay is located in Perth’s central business district (CBD). Mixed-use here means a type of urban design or planning that combines multiple uses of residential, cultural, commercial, entertainment, and more into one space. The ultimate purpose is to create a pedestrian connection.
Built on the Esplanade Reserve, the project constructed an artificial inlet and modified the neighboring environments, including Barrack Square. It focused on the north shore of Perth Water, close to the Swan Bells landmark. It also reconnects the river with other east-west areas of Perth City Link, Yagan Square, the Perth Cultural Center, and more.
The project also included the development of surrounding apartments, office spaces, hotels, retail spaces, and more. The announcement for the name “Elizabeth Quay” was in 2012, and its official opening was on 29 January 2016.
